Four days later, the two friends stood in front of their second Rift, watching the pulsating black energy flare up now and again. Thomas narrowed his eyes as he observed it. “Does it look smaller compared to the one at the hospital?”

“I’d hope so,” Daniel commented as he signaled the young men to follow him further towards the Rift.

It feels strange being so close to a Rift again, Lance thought as his eyes remained fixed on the mass of black energy. Daniel had persuaded the lads to join him inside a Rift. This time there would be a lot of Rifters backing them up and a lot more preparation. It had terrified the young men at first, but Daniel’s words had made sense when he explained just how different an average Rift clearing would be for them. The experience would strengthen their resolve and educate them, as well as lessen the fear of a Rift. The quicker they did so, the easier it would be.

Like most Rifts, there were layers of security around it. Large nets and rope created an almost spherical protective layer, preventing major incidents when Rifters or objects exited the Rift. There were mobile housing units installed behind the cage of nets. These structures contained a small barracks, an office for the overseers of the site, and private cubicles for the Rifters.

“They ranked this Rift as a Level Two. It differs vastly from the Level Seven one that we experienced together,” Daniel explained, pointing at the size of the Rift and how it even felt weaker than what they had experienced.

Each time Rifters cleared a Rift, its energy and size would decrease further until it collapsed in on itself. Companies such as Rift-based Advanced Metallurgy, or R.A.M., were one of many that profited from these Rifts.

Daniel pointed at the large metal bins that were near the main building. “The setup is quite simple. Companies like R.A.M. buy ownership of certain Rifts from the government in exchange for their guarantee that they will clear it, not risk public safety, and will occasionally help with other Rifts. In return, R.A.M. can let its Rifts grow a few Levels before clearing it for profit. This creates the opportunity to extract precious resources and harvesting rare items from the inhabiting monsters. When done with a Rift, the porters then drop collected resources inside these metal—”

Enthusiastically interrupting, Thomas blurted out, “So, it’s like a farm or a mine, right?”

As the two men continued to discuss the situation, Lance thought about how he felt. It was easy to point a finger at companies such as R.A.M. and claim that they were seeking profit out of a horrible event, but he could also make the argument that these companies were supplying the raw resources needed to manufacture weapons, armor, and other tools. With them, Rifters could more reliably clear Rifts.

As one might suspect, the world isn’t just black or white, Lance thought as he followed Daniel’s instructions to check their gear one last time before they went in.
